OVERVIEW ON 18 WHEELER ACCIDENTS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a count of fatal accidents involving motor vehicles traveling on public highways.

NHTSA’s General Estimates System (GES), a probability-based, nationally representative sample of police-reported accidents resulting in death, personal injury, and property damage. In 2017, NHTSA phased out GES and replaced it with the Crash Report Sampling System.

NHTSA’s Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS), which builds on GES starting with data for 2016. Although both CRSS and GES are samples of police-reported accidents involving all types of motor vehicles, CRSS contains a more efficient and flexible sample with updated traffic and demographic information. Therefore, comparisons of 2016 (and later) CRSS estimates to older GES estimates should be made with caution.

ORDINARY REASONS OF 18 WHEEL CAR ACCIDENTS

Determining the cause of an 18 wheeler accident is not always obvious. The truck driver is not always primarily responsible for the accident. Several factors are often responsible for the cause of the accident. Here are some of the most common causes of 18 wheeler accidents.

Driver inexperience

Drivers must undergo extensive training before obtaining their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Requirements for each state vary, but generally drivers must pass a written test, obtain a learner permit, and pass a driving test.

With the increasing demand for truck drivers in the industry, companies may knowingly or unknowingly hire underqualified drivers. In addition, cases of truck license fraud, where truck schools issue fraudulent licenses, can increase the number of inexperienced drivers on the roads.

Driver fatigue

According to FMCSA, fatigue was a contributing factor in 13 percent of accidents involving commercial vehicle (CMV) drivers. Truck drivers can be on the road for many hours in grueling conditions. Therefore, falling asleep at the wheel is a real risk when driving a large truck.

To counteract this risk, there are regulations on operating hours (HOS) to limit driving times. For example, after 10 hours off-duty, drivers are limited to 11 hours of driving time. There are also mandatory breaks that drivers must take during their shifts. But even with these regulations, driver fatigue can still set in. Additionally, drivers may choose to violate HOS regulations to meet delivery requirements, making it dangerous for all road users.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is a major factor in truck accidents and near misses. Nearly 80 percent of accidents are due to some form of driver distraction. Distracted driving can take many forms.

It can be inside or outside the cabin, including things like:

Writing SMS

Watching Mobile

Use of Shipping Devices

Eating and Drink

Smoking

Look at the billboard

Looking into the mirror glass

Customize the GPS

Today’s technology has made it harder for drivers to focus on the roads. From tablets to mobile devices to in-cabin displays, a moment’s distraction is enough for an 18-wheeler accident to occur.

More people died on U.S. roads last year than in any year since 2005, according to new data released Tuesday by federal vehicle safety officials.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation, estimates that 42,915 people died in traffic accidents in 2021, a 10.5% increase from the 38,824 fatalities in 2020. Fatalities include pedestrians, cyclists and others who may have died during a crash.

DEATH RATE IN USA DUE TO 18 WHEEL CAR ACCIDENT

The death toll in multi-vehicle accidents and on urban roads rose 16%, the largest year-over-year increase for incident-specific data, according to the agency. Other notable increases included: deaths among those aged 65 and over by 14%; pedestrian deaths up 13%; and fatalities in accidents involving at least one large truck by 13%.

US GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ON 18 WHEEL CAR ACCIDENT

In a statement Tuesday, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg called the situation “a crisis on America’s roads that we must address together.”

The NHTSA estimates that 44 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have increased traffic deaths in 2021.

The higher number of deaths corresponded to an increase in miles driven on US roads compared to 2020. Preliminary data reported by the Federal Highway Administration shows vehicle miles driven increased by about 325 billion miles in 2021 compared to 2020 or about 11.2%.

Buttigieg said the Biden administration is taking “decisive steps to reverse this devastating trend,” citing the agency’s previously announced National Roadway Safety Strategy and Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Despite the additional kilometers driven, the death rate based on kilometers driven remained roughly the same as of 2020. Estimates put the fatality rate for 2021 at 1.33 deaths per 100 million vehicle kilometers driven, compared to 1.34 deaths in 2020.
