PhD mandate relaxation for the assistant professor’s post can improve the quality of faculty.
The debate revolves around whether the PhD should be a key requirement for the assistant professor position or if this mandate should be eliminated. The Center has modified the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The University Grant Commission (UGC) has decided not to do a doctorate for an Assistant Professor. Mandatory for the position of Assistant Professors in university departments from 07.01.2021 to 07.01.2023.
The change has been introduced in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
UGC amendment for the qualification of assistant professors 2021
UGC has made an amendment to the UGC (Minimum qualifications for the appointment of teachers and other academic personnel in universities and colleges and Measures for the maintenance of standards in higher education), Regulation, 2018 with respect to clause 3.10 that stipulates that the Ph .D. The title will be a mandatory qualification for direct hiring for the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Universities w.e.f. 01.07.2023.
This amendment will be known as UGC (Minimum Qualifications for the Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Personnel in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education), Amendment Regulation, 2021.
Old Criteria: PhD Compulsory For Assistant Professor’s post 2021
Assistant Professor (Selection Grade/Academic Level 12) in Universities. The Ph.D. Degree shall be a mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the Assistant Professors in colleges and universities.
